Effects of organic matter and agroindustrial waste extracts on growth and nitrogen uptake of Chinese Mustard (Brassica campestris L-spp.)

Intoduction - Agro-industrial waste, such as coffee leather, cocoa leather, used straw mushroom culture and shrimp head waste has caused environmental pollution because it has not been utilized optimally. Agro-industrial waste mixed with organic matter, such as manure or earthworm castings has been utilized as organic fertilizers, which can provide essential nutrients for plants. However, its use is still in bulky form so it is less practical. Organic fertilizers also have a disadvantage, namely the nutrient content is relatively low compared to inorganic fertilizers, therefore, higher doses are needed. As a result costs of transportation, warehouse or storage and labor increase.

Extraction of a bulky mixture of organic matter and agro-industrial waste into liquid fertilizer can be an alternative to improve the efficiency of organic fertilizer made from a mixture of agro-industrial waste and organic matter. The advantages of liquid fertilizer are it can provide nutrients for plants without damaging the biological and physical properties of soil as well as more practical in its application. The influence of the extracts of mixtures of organic matter and agro-industrial waste plants, i.e. Chinese mustard (Brassica campestris L-spp.) was studied.

Objective of the research was to evaluate the effects of the extracts of mixtures of organic matter and agro-industrial waste on the growth and nitrogen uptake of Chinese mustard.

Materials and Methods

The experiment was conducted using a randomized block design (RBD) with 3 factors and 3 replications. The first factor is the types of organic matter (O) consisting of cow manure = O1, earthworm castings = O2. The second factor is the agroindustry waste (L) consisting of coffee leather = L1, cocoa leather = L2, used straw mushroom culture = L3, and shrimp head waste = L4. The third factor is the type of extractants (E) consisting of distilled water (H2O) = E1, acetic acid (CH3COOH) 0.01 N = E2. The experiment was conducted using hydroponic cultivation system. 
Application of extracts of a mixture of organic matter and agro-industrial waste was carried out by spraying the extracts to the plant, i.e. 50 ml per plant. Plant height, leaf number, dry-matter, and nitrogen content in plant tissue were measured. Homogeneity of variances of the data obtained was tested using Bartlett’s test and additivity was tested using Tukey’s test. Least Significant Difference (LSD) test was performed at 5% level to detect significant differences between treatments. Correlation test was also performed between the main variables with nitrogen content in plant tissue.

Conclusion

The results show that a mixture of used straw mushroom culture with earthworm castings extracted using distilled water (H2O) is better in promoting growth and nitrogen uptake of Chinese mustard compared to other extracts. However, the extracts of a mixture of organic matter and agro-industrial waste extracted by distilled water (H2O) and acetic acid (CH3COOH) 0.01 N have the same effects in promoting the growth and nitrogen uptake of Chinese mustard. Plant height, leaf number and dry-matter of Chinese mustard show a positive correlation with nitrogen content in plant tissue. There are interactions between types of organic matter, agro-industrial waste and extract ants on the growth and nitrogen uptake of Chinese mustard.
